EMPLOYMENT

CURRENT John Dupuis & Associates
John Dupuis & Associates, based in South Carolina, is a firm offering expert witness, consulting, and audit services to the legal and insurance communities. Our specialized expertise is in the commercial property and casualty insurance business. We are most knowledgeable in the operations of an insurance company with special emphasis on the underwriting discipline.

1990 – 2003 Dumaine Insurance Services.
President and Owner
Dumaine was a General Agency specializing in proprietary underwriting programs for Artisan Contractors, Auto Repossessors, Pest Control Operators and Residential Care Facilities. In addition, Dumaine managed a book of across the board general liability business that was placed in the Excess and Surplus Lines market. The contractors program was the largest of the programs managed by Dumaine and was a fronted program for which Dumaine established rules, rates, forms and eligibility. In addition, Dumaine negotiated and placed the reinsurance treaties for the front companies. The contractors program was underwritten by both admitted and non admitted carriers. Dumaine closed its operations in July 2003.

1988 – 1990 Superior Insurance Group.
Executive Vice President
Senior Operations and Underwriting Officer in the holding company which owned a multi-line insurance carrier and an E&S Agency. Duties included oversight of all operations, excluding financial, conducted by the insurance company subsidiary. I was also responsible for the operations of the subsidiary Excess and Surplus Lines Agency which held contracts with many non admitted insurers and specialized in casualty insurance.

1981 – 1988 First Pacific Insurance Group.
President and CEO
In 1981, with the financial backing of a group of local investors, I organized a holding company whose goal was the formation of a California domiciled multi line insurance company. The company received its charter late in the year and started actively underwriting business in early 1982. The philosophy of the company was to offer a limited number of specialized products to a restricted group of retail brokers. My duties included everything that goes with a start up operation, including underwriting, managing claims through a Third Party Administrator, development of a data system and reporting to the board and shareholders. The company was sold to an outside investor in 1988

1973 – 1981 M.I.G.
Executive Vice President
The company was a monoline workers compensation carrier that wanted to expand its underwriting into other lines. I was hired to establish the Commercial Multi Peril Division. Duties of that position included establishing underwriting policy, developing rules, rates and forms, negotiating reinsurance treaties and establishing the new division in the branch offices located around the country.

The group purchased George Kausler, an MGA located in New Orleans that specialized in river marine business. I was appointed President with autonomous authority to manage the Agency. Kausler ultimately expanded beyond the marine lines and began underwriting Commercial Multi Peril and monoline Casualty business. Again, I established the underwriting policy, negotiated the treaties and hired the staff; all the while continuing to be the Senior Underwriter. I also served as the senior officer for another of the Group’s entities, an Excess & Surplus Lines underwriting and brokering firm.

After three years in that position I returned to the Home office in the position of Executive Vice President in charge of all operations other than financial. I was responsible for the results of all divisions including Workers Compensation, Casualty, Commercial Multi Peril and Fidelity.

1966 – 1973 Hartford Insurance Group.
Underwriting Manager
I was recruited out of college to join with ten other participants in a one year long intensive classroom training program. During that year we were trained in all facets of the insurance company business by instructors who were actively engaged in their specialties such as underwriting, actuarial, engineering etc.

After completing the program I was assigned to the New Orleans branch where I served as a property and casualty underwriter. Less than one year into that job, I was promoted and returned to the home office as a Senior Underwriter. In that position I was responsible for supervising the underwriting activities of a number of major branches.

In 1970 The Hartford decided to purchase the Managing General Agency that was running their west coast operations. I was transferred to San Francisco and given the position of Underwriting Manager with duties that included incorporating the staff and operating philosophy of an Agency operation into a company branch office. At the time, the San Francisco branch was the company’s largest branch operation.
